O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. She made it to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed with her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put to the bottom three or second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never finished lower than the third place. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
